Chino
Classification: Spectral Rhino Wraith
Habitat: Dormon – Golden Desert & Tar Pits
Elemental Type: Ghost / Magic / Sand
Status: Highly Dangerous (Stampede-Class)
Group Name: A vanish of Chinos
Description:
Chinos are phantasmal beasts—rhino skeletons animated by swirling clouds of purple Magic magic mist. Their hollow ribcages glow from within, pulsing with fractal energy, while thick, gaseous trails leak out from eye sockets and mouth like smoldering smoke. These skeletal wraiths charge with terrifying momentum across the shifting sands of [[Dormon]], often appearing and disappearing mid-gallop in explosive poofs of violet haze.
Their curved, jagged horns—still attached to ghost-bone skulls—can collect radiant geometric patterns before releasing devastating fractal pulse attacks, a rare form of wild, uncontrolled Magic magic otherwise only channeled by Dominic.
Behavior:
- Messenger Amiffs: Friendly variants have developed the ability to **record holographic messages**. These Amiffs are occasionally used by the people of Terra to transmit communications over long distances, as they float across regions and eventually descend to deliver their stored projection.
- Predatory Amiffs: The more dangerous forms use their tendrils to capture small creatures—or even unsuspecting travelers—and **lift them high into the sky**, where they feed over time. Once the Amiff dies, it floats back to the ground, often alongside the skeletal remains of its prey.
- Death Cycle & Messes: The skies of Jouven occasionally create turbulent updraft intersections. At these points, numerous Amiffs die in the same area, raining down like bioluminescent petals—along with whatever remains they carried. These haunting zones, littered with **Amiff husks and bones**, are ominously known as **“messes.”**
Lifespan & Evolution:
- Stage 1 – Neon Polyps: Clustered on the forest floor; pulse faintly with electric rhythm
- Stage 2 – Lift Phase: As the Amiff grows, it builds enough charge to ascend
- Stage 3 – Drift Phase: The mature Amiff glides across skies, feeding or delivering messages
- Stage 4 – Death Float: Once depleted of energy, the Amiff descends back to the forest floor
Variants by Color:
- Common: Neon Green, Neon Purple
- Uncommon: Neon Blue, Neon Orange
- Rare: Boss Amiff (shimmers with iridescent rainbow crystal hues; unusually large and hostile)
Behavior:
Spectral Stampede: Chinos are rarely seen alone. They move in erratic herds, phasing unpredictably in and out of visibility, making them nearly impossible to track or outrun. Their misty teleportations leave behind split-second afterimages in the sand, disorienting even the most seasoned desert travelers.
Self-Destruct Core Surge: When mortally wounded or sensing their demise, Chinos begin to shake violently, overcharging their spectral core before exploding into a cloud of purple lightning and shattered bone. This detonation leaves a lingering hex-field that distorts light and sound.
Sand Collapse: If threatened, a Chino can collapse instantly into a pile of bones and vanish beneath the dunes, only to reassemble later from the sands themselves. This burial phase is how Chinos rest or evade combat.
Tar Bathing: Strangely, Chinos are drawn to the Tar Pits of Dormon, where they submerge themselves in bubbling black ooze to rejuvenate their core mist. These tarbaths amplify their glow and make them more volatile upon return.
Abilities:
Phase Step: Instantly teleport a short distance, leaving behind a burst of purple mist
Fractal Horn Blast: Channels Magic magic through their horn into a charged radial projectile
Core Detonation: Triggers a sacrificial explosion on death or desperation
Sand Sink: Temporarily collapse into bones and hide beneath desert terrain
Ecological & Magical Notes:
While no human has ever domesticated a Chino, [[Dominic]] is said to share an unusual connection with them due to his exclusive possession of a Magic magic gem. It’s rumored that wild Chinos may hesitate when confronting him, recognizing something kin within his aura. Whether this is instinct or lingering ancestral bond is unknown.
Combat Warning:
Avoid direct confrontation in open terrain. If you see one, assume a herd is near—even if you can’t see them yet. Listen for the rhythmic thunder of phantom hooves and beware the sudden hush of teleporting beasts before they rematerialize all around you.
